Description:
Tango Monastery was founded by the grandson of the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kinley, and this monastery is one of Bhutan''s most historical in the Kagyu tradition. Approximately 50 - 60 minute walk uphill to the Tango Monastery, the present structure was constructed in the 17th century, this monastic school is the residence of Desi Tenzin Rabgye, a reincarnate of the founder. '' Tango'' translated means horses head, upon arriving at the complex with its impressive architecture, white washed walls and curved structure, you will notice this monastery has been constructed in the ''Dzong'' design.
As we enter the inner courtyard to explore the complex, at the entrance is two large ornate prayer wheels. Contained within are hand written copies of the ''Om'' mantra - Om Mani Padme Hum; all prayer wheels are rotated in a clockwise direction, to release the spiritual blessings. This sacred site was founded in the 13th century by Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa and constructed in its present form in 1688. It was here Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal meditated in a cave, after migrating from Tibet to Bhutan in 1616. The original meditation caves are now covered by the current monastery, a 12 cornered structure with six temples.
